About the Property

Rhino Lodge, located just a few hundred meters from the rim of the iconic Ngorongoro Crater, holds a significant historical legacy. Once the residence of Henry Fosbrooke, Ngorongoro's first conservator and author of "The Eighth Wonder," this lodge played a pivotal role in the area's recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Rhino Lodge has retained its rustic, old-world charm and now offers affordable accommodation for those seeking to explore the wonders of the Ngorongoro Crater and its surroundings. Positioned at an altitude of 2,200 meters above sea level, the lodge offers comfortable rooms, scenic views, and a connection to the fascinating wildlife of the region.

Rooms

Rhino Lodge offers 24 semi-detached rooms arranged in two L-shaped rows around a central courtyard. Each room features a long wooden deck overlooking the lush montane forest. The interior of every room is adorned with bright Maasai blankets, adding vibrant colors to the whitewashed walls. To ensure a comfortable stay, each room is equipped with a compact en-suite bathroom featuring a hot water shower. Given the altitude's potential chilliness, each room is furnished with a wood-burning stove, with staff ready to light it on cold evenings. Hot water bottles are also provided to ward off the cold. While the lodge doesn't overlook the crater itself, it offers breathtaking vistas of misty montane forest and distant Mount Oldeani. The lodge's well-maintained grounds are frequented by local wildlife, including elephants, buffalo, zebra, waterbuck, hyena, and Marabou storks.
