Arrival, Karibu Tanzania!

Your adventure begins early with a comprehensive briefing, followed by breakfast. A 45-minute drive will take you from Moshi (910m) to the Machame village (1490m), where guides and porters will meticulously prepare and pack the supplies and equipment. The condition of the road dictates whether a vehicle can take you directly to the Machame gate; if the path is impassable, a 3 km trek through mud, typically lasting about an hour, will lead you there instead.

Upon arriving and registering at the gate office, your ascent commences as you enter the lush rainforest. A lunch pack will be provided at the gate, and you can hydrate with bottled water purchased previously at the Springlands Hotel in Moshi. The rainforest may present rain, turning the trail soggy, muddy, and slippery.

As evening approaches, the porters will boil water for drinking and washing, and the cook will prepare dinner. You'll then retire to your tent for the night, where temperatures at the Machame campsite can drop to the freezing point, marking a chilly but exhilarating end to the day's journey.

Machame Gate to Machame Camp

An early start at Machame camp sets the tone for the day, as you embark on the journey just after breakfast. The initial climb takes you through the forest's canopy for about an hour, reaching the moorland zone where the gradient becomes gentler for the next two hours. A brief pause for lunch and rest prepares you for the continuation of your ascent along a rocky ridge leading onto the expansive Shira plateau. It's here that the Eastern vistas open up, offering breathtaking views of the Western Breach and its majestic glaciers, with Kibo looming to your east.

Your day's trek concludes upon arrival at the Shira campsite, situated at an altitude of 3,840 meters. As evening sets in, the porters will once again prepare boiling water for drinking and washing, followed by the serving of dinner. Positioned within this exposed camp, you'll find the night to be even colder than the last, with temperatures plunging well below freezing, marking a serene yet stark reminder of the mountain's rugged beauty.

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

The journey now veers eastward into a semi-desert and rocky expanse surrounding the Lava Tower, culminating at an elevation of 4,630 meters after approximately a five-hour trek. A designated area serves as the lunch spot before you tackle the ascent on the rocky scree path to Lava Tower, marking the most challenging day of the expedition thus far. It's at this juncture that climbers may begin to experience the initial signs of altitude sickness, including breathlessness, irritability, and headaches.

Post-lunch, a descent of nearly 680 meters leads you to the Barranco camping area. Having reached the day's peak altitude at Lava Tower, the descent underscores the acclimatization advantage of this segment. This two-hour journey down to Barranco camp not only offers a respite but also presents ample opportunities to capture stunning photographs of the Western Breach and Breach Wall.

Nestled in a valley beneath the imposing Breach and the Great Barranco Wall, the campsite promises a remarkable sunset scene, setting a picturesque backdrop as you await dinner preparation. The night spent at Barranco Campsite, with its unique location, adds a memorable chapter to your adventure.

Shira Camp to Barranco Camp

This acclimatization day is expertly designed to enhance your adaptation to the altitude, ensuring a successful summit attempt. As you conquer the famed Barranco Wall, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramas that promise to elevate your spirit. The path to Karanga Camp not only prepares your body for the heights ahead but also offers a moment to marvel at the natural wonders of Kilimanjaro.

The journey continues towards Barafu Camp. As you make your way, you'll transition into an environment totally exposed to the relentless gales, where tents are pitched on a narrow, stony, and somewhat perilous ridge. It's crucial to acquaint yourself with the surrounding terrain before nightfall to prevent any mishaps. The summit looms a further 1,345 meters above, and you're slated to begin the final ascent later that same night.

Preparation is key; ready your equipment, ski stick, and thermal clothing for the summit attempt. This preparation phase should include checking and replacing the batteries in both your headlamp and camera, ensuring you have a spare set for each. To avoid the risk of your water freezing, consider carrying it in a thermal flask. Plan to retire to bed around 19:00, aiming for a few hours of vital rest and sleep, ideally no more than five hours, before you face the summit challenge.

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

You will awaken at around 11:30 PM, and after savoring some tea and biscuits, you'll venture into the night. Your journey will take a northwesterly path, climbing through dense scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This six-hour trek to Stella Point ranks as the most challenging phase of the climb for many, both mentally and physically. Upon arrival at Stella Point (5,685m), you'll take a brief respite and be greeted by an extraordinary sunrise, arguably the most magnificent one you're likely to witness, weather allowing.

From Stella Point, the path typically features snow all the way during your two-hour climb to Uhuru Peak. The length of your stay at the summit will be dictated by the weather conditions. It's advisable not to linger excessively, as the combination of cold and fatigue can make resuming your descent particularly challenging. Take a moment to cherish your achievement and the unforgettable experience, a memory to treasure for a lifetime. The descent to Barafu from the summit will take about three hours. Here, you'll enjoy a well-deserved, though brief, rest and gather the remainder of your gear before continuing your descent to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, your journey continues from the Mweka Gate down to the Mweka village, a trek that is typically muddy and takes about an hour. Upon reaching the village, you will be driven back to the Springlands Hotel where a delicious hot lunch awaits you! Afterward, you'll return to Moshi where a much-needed hot shower will be ready for you at the Springlands Hotel, where you will stay overnight on a full-board basis.

It is customary and greatly appreciated to provide tips at the conclusion of your journey. Tips can be conveniently given to the guide at the Springlands Hotel. This is also the venue where successful climbers are awarded their summit certificates. Climbers who reached Stella Point (5,685m) will receive green certificates, while those who made it to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) are honored with gold certificates, marking their significant achievements.

Such an amazing, once in a lifetime experience. We visited last fall and took the 6 day route with Altezza and couldn't have asked for a better experience. It was a fairly mild to moderate hike up until the summit night, that was definitely the hardest. Some of our group got altitude sickness, but were taken good care of and we all made it to the top and back. Would definitely recommend!!

Once in a life time experience. Better to choose 7-8 days of trek to get adapted to the climate and altitude. Best time to visit is in July-August. Make sure you physically fit mentally strong to complete summit successfully.

I climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, being the tallest mountain in Africa located in Tanzania, with its highest peak at 5,895Meters (19,340 feet). I am at Uhuru Peak (highest peak) and very proud of myself for having achieved this milestone.

The climb was gentle the first few days and once we got to Kibo Hut at 4,720M above sea level, I felt a bit queasy, the air was thinner, breathing was a bit more difficult but manageable. I experienced some altitude sickness, though we had also taken some time to adjust to the elevation. I never imagined sleeping at such an altitude either!

We were a great team, with experienced guides, cook, porters and fellow hikers.
Our vitals were taken at each elevation, which is good to monitor how your body is doing as you assess yourself on a scale of 1-10 on how you feel.

On descending and looking back, I feel like it was just a dream... Wow, did I do that!.. And now I have just woken up and preparing for my next hike..
I received a certificate too!

Well, this achievement and experience also demonstrates my own goals that I can attain outside the corporate world. Take some time off, prepare and do it!

Tackled just after breakfast this 1000ft scramble is not technically difficult but you are at 13,000ft so you need to concentrate. It is quite exhilarating and from the top there are great views of the great barranco valley all the way down to Moshi and also of Kilimanjaro itself which is getting closer now.

The barranco wall is an amazing climb. It's not difficult if you've been doing research on preparing for it but do train so you can enjoy the climb! It's the best part of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, you take off early in the morning which you get to enjoy the amazing colors in the sky. The climb does not require any serious skill. Normal fitness is enough to ascend. View from the top caldera is impressive.

It’s a technical wall to climb. More like rock climbing. Go slow and East. View at top is amazing. After third night stay in the route to Kilimanjaro by trek. Beautiful landscapes and jungle. 8/9 hours hiking approximately to reach next camp . The camp is amazing itself set by the porters with tents to sleep, cook and eat separately.

This is one of the camps I truly enjoyed a whole night sleep on my way to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. It is at 3995m above sea level and offers a nice place to acclimatize. At this camp we could see both Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru during sunset. Just like most camps it comes with clean toilets.

This camp is a straight forward hike from Karanga camp. The camp sits at 4673m above sea level. At this camp, you can see the beautiful view of the Mawenzi peak and the Kibo peak.
The camp is sloppy and since it is quite high, it is very cold and sometimes even snows.
This camp serves as the base camp as you ascend to the Uhuru peak.
Barafu camp is close to Kosovo camp which sits at around 5000m asl.

This to me is the point at which when you reach at, you know you deserve a medal. Take a minute and pat yourself at the back. In my opinion Sunrise as Stella point should still be enjoyed as at Uhuru peak. At Stella point you can still see the beautiful glaciers and a view of the crater.

Uhuru means freedom and once you reach the summit it's the most incredible feeling ever. All of your hard work and willpower to never give up is what you experience at the top. You feel accomplished. You reached the summit and conquered the highest peak in Africa and the tallest mountain rise in the entire world! You did it!

A fantastic experience pole pole up on summit day, mostly in the dark. We had great weather together with a great view above the clouds. The glaciers were clearly visible above the clouds, although we were told they're getting smaller due to climate change.

Congrats to everybody who makes it up here. My highlight was reaching Stella Point and getting a glimpse into the crater. So reaching Uhuru Peak just feels like an "unnecessary" additional 1 hour of a hike on relatively flat terrain just to tick it off or a point you want to take a picture at and get the he'll down again. Still, the views to the ice glaciers nearby make the hike very much worthwhile. Again, congrats to all of us who make it up here!

Mweka Camp is strategically located on Mount Kilimanjaro's Mweka Route, serving as a primary descent campsite for climbers who have reached the summit via various routes. Situated at an altitude of approximately 3,100 meters (10,170 feet), it provides a much-needed resting point after the exhausting summit attempt. The camp is nestled in the upper forest zone, offering a cooler and more humid environment compared to the higher altitudes, with the potential for rain. This setting allows climbers to enjoy the rich biodiversity of Kilimanjaro's montane forest, including dense vegetation and the chance to hear and see various bird species. Mweka Camp features basic amenities for climbers to rest and recover, preparing for the final descent to the park gate the next day. The camp's location also offers picturesque views of the mountain above and the opportunity for reflection on the accomplishment of reaching Uhuru Peak.

The descent through Mweka Camp is generally safe, with precautions for altitude sickness still applicable. Vaccinations for Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A, and Typhoid, along with malaria prophylaxis, are recommended for travelers to Tanzania.

Descent from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate is on foot, with a well-defined trail leading climbers through the forest to the park's exit.

Climbers, including those descending to Mweka Camp, typically require a Tanzanian visa or an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA), obtainable in advance or upon arrival for many nationalities.

Millenium Camp

while going down you are walking straight to a see of clouds. There is something to it…
But the camp on itself you can skip.

First be careful not to be confused by the name. This camp is referred to as millennium camp even though the sign post on the camp is written High camp. It sits at 3950m asl. so it serves as a good camp for acclimatization. The camp has clean toilets and is mostly surrounded by shrubs. This means the camp is not windy and not as cold as other camps.

After climbing up 4,000ft to the summit you have descended 7,000ft to Millennium camp. You are back in the land of trees and warmth and you will be exhausted but very satisfied

It's a camp downhill from Karanga to Mweka camp. People who can't trek all the way through Mweka camp stay overnight here. But when you do it, the next day to Mweka gate is very tough as it will take around 6 to 8 hrs to hike down. So if u get a chance, do take a short break here and directly get over to Mweka camp so that it will be easy to go to the gate d next day. Path to this camp is rocky and bumpy.

Way from millennium camp to Mweka camp is very steep and rocky and will take more time than expected..

Way from Mweka camp to d gate crosses through pristine rainforest and is a feast to the eyes. But make sure u have a good pair of shoes as it's slippery in most of the way..

And in Mweka gate comes the end of your trail and can head towards your destination 👍🏽👍🏽

The nicest of the camps we stopped on our Kili climb at 13000 feet. It’s for trekkers on their way down from the summit but it’s low enough to get a break from the high altitude and less crowded then the next camp down. The only downside is that it makes for longer hiking the next day.

That was the end for us. Cannot begin to explain how extraordinary this hike was. Entre grandeur et désespérance. So glad we did it and at the same time now so sad I will never do it for the first time ever again.

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is a life changing experience that I would highly recommend. We recent did it with a group of 13 and countless support staff in porters, cooks, guides and others. We used a local operator, Tanzania Elsewhere, and they were incredible. Our group did the Lemosho route trail which we really enjoyed and gave us all plenty of time to adjust to the altitude on our way up.

After a long hike down Kilimanjaro i was happy to see the gate. End of a great adventure.

This is the gate that leads to the Mweka Camp and one of the entrances to Kilimanjaro park. The gate has all the basic amenities and you can even buy drinks there. There is spacious seating while you wait either to register or to receive your certificates after hiking up to Uhuru peak.

This gate acts as the back way to these who climb the kilimanjaro mountain  from Machame gate...although can be the entrance but not much preferable for tourists ...and can be the entrance to the porters who acts as the supplier of some staffs to the company that may need something out to the city

Everyone after reaching at this gate must be very very veery it happy 😊 😊 because to climb kilimanjaro is not easy like to break an egg.. 🎊

Great to come down the mountain and have your van and cold beer waiting for you! Register in the building can take awhile depending on how many people come down at the same time but it's worth it when you get your certification.

You will feel excited for the accomplishment as you are trekking out, but sad as the trail gets wider and wider becoming the road to leave the park. The final gate congratulates you and the trek is officially over. The Mt. Kilimanjaro Premium Lager while you wait for the certificate from the park is a must!

Great route through several climatic zones filled with abundant fauna that changes from Jurassic Park like to otherworldly and Mars like. There’s a small shop to grab a coffee and a small picnic area to have lunch before you begin your climb.

Entrance to  Mount Kilimanjaro National Park and the Machame Route climb route, at 1800m amsl.  We'll managed and kept. They have shops here where you can buy any gear you might have forgotten. If you're going on an expedition, the registration takes a while, give yourself about 2 hours, especially during peak season. Also they check weights of all porters bags, make sure to pack within the 16kg limit, otherwise they may ask you to remove some items from your bag- quite strict on this.

Anyway, the gate welcomes you to the most beautiful rain forest.

Day 1 of 6  Machame "Whiskey" Route. Hundreds of porters and guides finalizing details and getting bags weighed. There are bathrooms and plenty of seating areas. There is a small store to buy last minute gear or snacks. Most guides give out boxed lunches at this point so you'll see everyone munching together. The wait time can be long depending on how many people are starting that day (1.20 hours for my solo group). You will register as well so memorise your passport number unless you feel like having it out. Nice time to see/meet who you will be hiking along with each day of the hike. At the top of the gate don't be alarmed (like I was) to be metal searched for guns and drones.

Beautiful starting point of Kilimanjaro, u can visit up to the gate, once you cross you will have to pay the fee.
